What is VuwaniTalk and how does it work?
A plain-language introduction to VuwaniTalk, the low-cost international calling app, and how it connects your calls.
An affordable way to call the world
VuwaniTalk is a Voice over IP (VoIP) application that lets you make international calls to mobile phones and landlines over your internet connection. Instead of paying a mobile operator premium rates for international minutes, you use Wi-Fi, 4G or 5G data to route your call, which brings the cost down dramatically.
There are no subscriptions and no connection fees. You only pay for the minutes you actually use, and credit is deducted from your account balance in small per-second or per-minute amounts depending on the destination.
How a call works
- You open the app and dial a number or pick a contact.
- VuwaniTalk checks that you have enough balance and connects your call over the internet.
- The other person answers on any regular phone — they never need the app.
- Per-minute charges are taken from your balance only for the time you talk.
Who is VuwaniTalk for
VuwaniTalk is designed for anyone who calls internationally on a regular basis — families separated by borders, students studying abroad, small businesses with overseas clients, and travellers. It is especially popular across Southern Africa and the wider African continent, where keeping in touch with relatives abroad is a daily need.
What you need to get started
- A smartphone running Android or iOS.
- An internet connection (Wi-Fi, 4G or 5G). You can also top up before you travel.
- A valid email address to create your account.
- A small credit balance — top up directly in the app or on the website.
